Exploring Harmonies

"Harmony is injecting melody with emotion. And the language of musical harmony is an absolutely extraordinary one."

-Jacob Collier

Did you know:
My journey as an herbal tea farmer has paralleled my journey as a musician.

*I am now an herbal tea farmer AND a harpist.*

As a Musician:

I have begun exploring harmony: I am amazed by the emotions evoked by chords.

As a Farmer:

I have discovered there are beautiful harmonies in my field.

Explore with me.

The Harmony: Childhood Innocence
A sonic memory of bliss lives in my field.

This chord is melodic; it frolics.

The butterfly hunters' little feet patter across my ground while a wild net whooshes behind.
And laughter. Always laughter.

A school bus rumble followed by the inevitable burst of curious chatter.
Then little seeds from little hands tap the earth.
This followed by poured-water and hopeful-sighs.

A chirp. Treasure! My first precious, sparkling berry is plucked with a stem-snap.
Then with a juicy gush it's gone.

The Harmony: Pollinators in Nectar Flow
Each summer season is passed with this soft, delicate undercurrent.

This harmony is a hymn; a deep, poetic chant.

The Butterfly: Nearly silent, the butterfly wings whisper from one blossom to the next.
Delicate feet touch down.
 Delicate wings open and close.
  Delicate antenna tremble.
Delicately, each proboscis drinks it in.

The Honeybee: A collective hum that is multiplied by thousands the closer I get to their hive.
But each separate hum starts.
Stops. Starts again. Flower to flower.
Never resting.

The Hummingbird: I hear their feathers and a Doppler zing zips by.
All before I see the little bird.
So small, yet so resonant is the sound this little one adds to the harmony of the nectar flow.

The Harmony: Summer Rain
A crescendo. And on Colorado summer days, I always greet them with gratitude.

These are an aria. Rich beautiful melodies that sooth and cool.

Often preceded by deep rumbles from approaching thunder.
And a warning rush of cool wind.

Then I hear the pattering. Little taps on the ground.
Soft sonorous drips as water hits petals, leaves, berries.
My hat.

It turns into a rhapsody.
Exuberant praise from the plants.
And me.

Just as harmonies are layers of sounds...

my herbal tea blends are layers: flavors & smells & sounds.

Each of my herbal teas are infused not only with the herb ingredients...

but also with the harmonies of my field.

And even the sub-sonic harmonies:

mountains, sunrises, alpine cascades.

How do you put harmonies into a teacup?
Try it for yourself.

This month's e-love letter was inspired by Jacob Collier's interview on TED Radio Hour: The Language of Harmony.

As always:

Thank you

I'm honored to be your herbal tea farmer.

Be well,
Shannon
